Durable Power of Attorney

Are you concerned about who will make financial, personal, and/or health care decisions for your elderly and/or disabled loved one?  Do you worry that you won’t be available when they need an advocate?  A Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) can ensure that your loved one’s wishes are respected.

What is Durable Power of Attorney?

A general DPOA provides instructions about the management of your personal and/or financial affairs in the event that you are incapacitated or cognitively impaired.  This legal document gives you and your care partners specific information about how you want your affairs handled.  Knowing that your personal and financial matters will be managed without interruption or delay will give you and your caregivers peace of mind.

What is DPOA for Health Care?

DPOA for Health Care is similar to DPOA, but it is specific to health care needs.  Many people believe that a Living Will guarantees that your financial, personal, and/or health care wishes will be met.  Unfortunately, a Living Will is not sufficient. DPOA for Health Care allows you to name a person to make health care decisions for you if you cannot make them yourself.  This legal document provides instructions about your preferences for medical treatment in the event of serious illness or injury.  It essentially gives a person of your choosing authority to carry out health care decisions according to your specific wishes.
