Dr. Roger Godfrey Skolmen
30 Dec 1929 - 12 Dec 2020

Roger Skolmen landed in Hawai’i in the 1950s, as a young man full of adventures and experiences on the high seas. He crewed aboard several sailing ships. Once he landed in Hawai’i, Dr. Skolmen worked on launching the first large commercial catamaran in Waikiki. Following a stint in the Armed Services,  Roger completed his college education, earning a Doctorate in Forestry from the University of Hawaii.  Throughout the next several decades, Roger worked with the University of Hawai’i and was instrumental in several important USDA projects. Publishing many scientific works and co-authoring a guide to “Common Forest Trees of Hawaii”, Dr. Skolmen was recognized as one of the experts in researching viable uses for native and introduced species of trees. Dr. Skolmen first became a Client of The Caregiver Foundation in 2014 utilizing our bill-paying services. As his need for support increased, his services shifted to include care support coordination and we were able to provide oversight of all his care services until his passing in December of 2020.

Dr. Skolmen’s ashes were interred in his beloved Pacific Ocean, fittingly transported out to sea in a beautiful sailing catamaran. We have been greatly honored to be able to know and serve Dr. Roger Godfrey Skolmen. A hui ho!
