This is a serious problem for many who are aging and either do not recognize their need for help or desperately wants to stay independent and refuses help. If this person can be considered unable to manage her own affairs (financial management, homekeepings, personal health and welfare etc.) the surest way to get help is by obtaining a professional guardian through the Court system. We serve in this capacity for many individuals. A less major approach is to get as creative as possible and get help in by “winning a housecleaning”, getting a sample of a new shampoo, bath soap etc. etc. Individual resources ultimately determine what help is obtainable. Don’t hesitate to put in a help request to the Adult Protective Service in your area. If this involves someone in Hawaii, we might be able to be of assistance. Please feel free to call!
Thank you for caring.
Gary

Aloha Eileen:
I will be in the office all day today 808-625-3782. I’ll be glad to talk over the situation and see how we might be able to help. Hope all is well. All the girls say Aloha to you!
Hi, a psychologist colleague of mine has a tough situation where one of her older adult clients lives alone, seems to need care support due to possible cognitive impairment (e.g., issues of hygiene, house maybe becoming unsanitary, possible mismanagement of her own finances). My friend is wondering what if anything can or should be done if the patient refuses to accept help?
Thanks!
My client wants to name your foundation as their Successor Trustee of their trust. What name should I put down?
The formal wording would be some variation on these 3 samples (from other Trust documents)
1. TRUSTEE SUCCESSION: GARY A. POWELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CAREGIVER FOUNDATION, INC. (or his successor) is designated as the _______ Trustee. A vacancy in the Trusteeship due to removal, resignation, death or disability of an acting Trustee shall be filled by the TRUSTEE(S) DESIGNATED BY THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE CAREGIVER FOUNDATION, INC. IN THE ORDER SPECIFIED IN A NOTARIZED DOCUMENT. All Trustees shall be permitted to accept appointments without court approval and shall have all of the duties and powers of Trustee.
2. THE _______ TRUSTEE SHALL BE GARY A. POWELL, IN HIS CAPACITY AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CAREGIVER FOUNDATION or his Successor as confirmed by the BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CAREGIVER FOUNDATION in a notarized document. All Trustees shall be permitted to accept appointments without court approval and shall have all the duties and powers of Trustee
3. Gary A. Powell, Executive Director of The Caregiver Foundation or his Successor
Thanks – If we can be of help in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Gary
When I call, no one answers, and when I leave a message, no one returns the call. I am using the 808 625-3782 number. Has the number changed? My number is 808 476-2345
Thank you
Athena
Athena – this message just came through and I apologize for your frustrations. We don’t have a technical support team so sometimes we mess up our own systems. Perhaps the most efficient way to communicate is to email our Director, Gary at gary@thecaregiverfoundation.org.
Aloha
I am my dad’s sole caregiver, no other relatives close enough to help. I also (now only realize) sole caregiver to my husband who has bipolar disorder all our marriage life. He’s better now, but took our 40 yrs together to resolve that. He helps me in small things he can handle, he understands my stress. Right now focus in on my dad who just moved to a Care Home, doesn’t like to accept the fact he should be there as I work full time.
Thanks for all you do! If you are not attending a support group, I recommend doing so. It is really good to have a forum where you can share feelings honestly and learn how others manage life while also living caregiving.
I am a caregiver for my mother. Her POA is my son her grand son i dont think he is using her finances property
Finances are one of the most difficult areas to manage properly and many families experience conflict as a result. If you can, ask to see the accounting. If he will not cooperate with you and you feel there is financial abuse, contact Adult Protective Services.
We don’t provide direct services like that. I suggest you contact a home care Agency in your neighborhood.
Thanks
Gary
