Recognizing NonProfit Scams

Many older adults are targeted by scammers pretending to be from nonprofit groups. They send letters, make phone calls, and set up phony websites that can trick generous people into sending them money. If you suspect that you or someone you love has received a scam letter, phone call, or email, you can report it to the AARP Fraud Watch Network. They keep track of reported scams, and can provide information and tips to help you protect yourself and your loved ones.

Read on for a list of tips to always do before donating money and what should get you feeling suspicious about a supposed nonprofit.

Always DO

  • Check the letter for a clearly listed address, website, and phone number
  • Check reputable lists of nonprofits for the organization’s name and rating. Charity Navigator and Guidestar list IRS-recognized nonprofits.
  • Always make sure the name on the letter is an exact match with any listed website, charity rating, or other information.
  • Check with a trusted family member or friend before sending money.
  •  Keep records of any donations that you make and check your financial statements to make sure you aren’t being charged for more than you’ve agreed to give.

Warning Signs

  •  The address is a PO Box, there is no phone number, or the website address does not match the organization’s name
  • You are asked to donate by cash, gift card, or wire transfer. Donations made by credit card or check offer you the most protection.
  • The letter pressures you to donate NOW. A legitimate nonprofit may ask for donations, but will never demand your money. Your donations are welcomed when and if you are willing to donate, at any time.
  • You did not sign up to receive letters from the organization.
